Free For All, Fun For All

Looking for ways to enjoy New Haven on shoestring budget? Well look no further! Here are some great things to do in the Elm City for FREE.

 

One of the greatest things about living in New Haven is, loving New Haven! There’s always something to do and despite the old adage, "nothing in life is free," there’s always art, theater and culture available with no strings attached.


Below, you’ll find some cool events coming up in the next few weeks and some year-round freebies.

 

 

 

Yale University Art Gallery

One of the area’s most understated but best museums, Yale Art Gallery boasts 185,000-piece collection. One of their current exhibitions is Jane Davis: Talking Graphics (thru July 11, 2010) and upcoming Eero Saarinen: Shaping The Future (Feb. 19, 2010-May 2, 2010). They also offer student-led and docent-led tours (Angles on Art and Masterpiece Tours).

On Friday, March 26 2010 take the Furniture Study Tour, 12p-1p or enjoy the 'Masters & Mavericks: Invoking a Western Lineage of Art' tour from 3p-4p.

Yale Center for British Art

Constantly pushing boundaries and enticing visitors, Yale Center for British Art will feature several exhibits, all for free, including Promiscuous Assemblage, Friendship, & The Order of Things (thru March 2010) and Varieties of Romantic Experience: Drawings from the Collection of Charles Ryskamp (thru April 25, 2010).

Future exhibits starting in March include the Yale Student Guide Exhibition Art in Focus: Installation, Interpretation, Narration (March 24, 2010 - June 22, 2010).

And Yale Center for British Art also comes alive weekly through concerts and film screenings — all are free.

On Thursday, March 25th at 6pm see 'The Draughtsman's Contract' in 35mm at the Whitney Humanities Center.  An introduction to the film will be given by Katie Trumpener, Professor, Comparative Literature, English, and Film Studies, Yale University and an informal discussion will follow the screening.

Artspace 

New Haven’s progressive home for all things creative offers plenty of free things year-round including their annual City-Wide Open Studios, which takes place in the fall.

Knights of Columbus Museum 

One of New Haven’s long-standing free institutions, the Knights of Columbus offers a classic take on the arts.

Enjoy their current exhibit, Majestic Mosaics, Guadalupe (pictured).

 

New Haven Museum & Historical Society 

Home to wonderful lectures about our city’s past, the New Haven Museum is now open for free the first Sunday of each month from 1p-4p (beginning Jan. 3, 2010).

Enjoy their exhibition, Men in Uniform, a portrait exhibition of New Haven men who served in the United States armed forces between 1812 and 1865.
 

 
 

New Haven Public Library

The old fall back, the FREE library is always a good option when times are tight.

Enjoy leisurely reading, Internet surfing and people watching free of charge. Also, sign up for Book Lovers, the library’s email newsletter or RSS feed that offers information about books and upcoming author readings at the library.

A few upcoming events include:

The public is invited to participate in a series of yoga classes in February and March (Wednesday, March 24 - Wednesday, May 5, from 1p-2p). Debbie Kahan will guide participants in stretching, basic yoga poses, and meditation. Classes are suitable for all fitness levels. There is no charge, but registration is required. Attendees should wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat or large towel.

Wednesday, March 24 @ 6p, meet Terry Walters, the Author of "Clean Food" one of National Public Radio's 10 cookbooks for 2009. Clean Food is an easy-to-understand guide showing the nutritional benefits of eating closer to the source-locally grown food. Copies of Clean Food will be available for sale/signing.


Saturday, April 3 @ 3p, PACK-Wilson, Family Night Out features oil drum painting.  An event sponsored by the Hill Family Initiative with dinner provided after the program.

Yale School of Music 

The words free are music to the ears and every year, and the Yale School of Music packs a full calendar of free shows. On Friday, March 26th at 8pm hear faculty artists Kyung Hak Yu and Elizabeth Parisot perform Mozart's Sonata in B-flat major, K. 545; Franck's Sonata for violin and piano; and Mendelssohn's Trio in D minor, Op. 49, with cellist Ole Akahoshi in the Morse Recital Hall.


 

Or you can listen to the Yale Voxtet Saturday, April 10th at 8pm in the Morse Recital Hall as they perform Roman Court Music with the Yale Collegium Players. Robert Mealy will be directing.
