The Institute Library (founded 1826) is New Haven, Connecticut's oldest independent circulating library and one of the last remaining membership libraries in North America. Conveniently located on Chapel Street in downtown New Haven, the Library provides its members with quiet reading areas and a large circulating collection of up-to-date literature. In addition to serving its members, the Institute Library proudly opens its doors to all visitors with regular community programs and events, from the Poetry Institute reading series the third Thursday of every month to rotating art exhibitions in the gallery on our newly reopened upper floor.
